|Caled Blackwell was one of those guys who just swept women off their feet with just one look. He grew up rich and popular, without having to work for a dollar he spent. Until he was 21 and his parents said if he wasn’t going to college, he might as well get out and find a work of his own.
Caleb was pretty much lost in Los Angeles with nowhere to go. He didn’t have any money so he spent his nights at random girls places since even without his money, the girls were still nuts for him. He wanted a job that was easy and that didn’t require much work, he had no experience with work and he wasn’t the brightest crayon of the box, if you get what I mean.
Thus, he decided to be an actor. Only, he didn’t know where to start. Or anything about the business actually, proven by the fact he thought it’d be an easy job. A friend of his (who also knew nothing about the movie industry) told him to go on a studio and ask to be in a movie. Caleb thought it was genious so he went to Hollywood to look for a place to start.
He found the DOA Recording Studio and went inside to take a look. The lobby didn’t have a living soul inside and Caleb couldn’t see the ghosts around him. Charon on the other hand, saw him. When the ferryman asked if Caled was alive, Caleb almost jumped out of his skin.
He stuttered a yes and Charon decided to kick him out. No living were allowed on the Underworld and Hades would surely be more than pissed if he found out a mortal found the entrance to the Underworld. But Caleb kept babbling about how he needed a job and that he’d be an actor for any movie the Studio needed.
When a tall woman in a dark long dress came in from the elevator, Charon was struggling to kick out the useless mortal off his lobby. Caleb then noticed the woman and let’s say, it was love at first sight. Only, it was one sided.
The woman looked at him with distaste and kicked him out so fast, he didn’t have the time to blink. Almost like darkness had sucked him and spit him outside the gates of the studio. He was frustrated, but decided to go look for other studios and get a job.
In the end, the best he got was to be the assistant to a huge movie star that was working in the Paramount Studios. The money he got was enough for him to rent a room in a hotel for himself but for days, the woman in the black dress hung on his mind.
On a may Saturday, he decided to go look for her again. He went back to the DOA Studio and asked Charon about her. Charon was more than annoyed and kept saying that the woman wasn’t interested in idiots and that he should go back. When she finally came inside the Lobby and found Caleb there again, she did the same thing she did the first time. Only this time, she went to the gates and told him not to come back.
That one phrase was more than enough to take the guy from smitten to head over heels. Everyday he didn’t have to work, he’d go back there to see her. Annoyed at the idiot who kept coming to a place he shouldn’t be coming, the woman agreed to one date in exchange for him leaving her alone after it.
Caleb wasted more money than he could afford at that dinner, but he didn’t care one bit. The woman was the first one that hadn’t fallen immediately in love with him and that made him really interested. In his desperation for her love, he spiked her drink so she would stay with him for one night. He knew she would ignore him after this date and wanted at least one more sweet memory of her.
Of course, just a spiked drink wouldn’t throw a goddess out, specially Nyx, but she thought that if she acted like it had effect, the man would leave her alone for good. And thus, they spent their night together. Caleb woke up in his hotel room alone and he knew the gorgeous woman wouldn’t want anything else to do with him. He kept his end of the deal and didn’t go back to visit her even though he was dying inside, wanting to see her.
Imagine his surprise when 9 months later, two baby twins were in his apartment (which he had finally got the money to rent with his new promotion to assistant-director) with a note from the woman in a dark dress.
Caleb then struggled to get more money to raise both of his daughters but it wasn’t working. He begged for his parents to help him and his mother, not wanting her grandchildren growing up to be useless like her son, decided to take them in.
Caleb went everyday to check up on them after his work was done and every weekend so he was able to see his children grow up. Caleb now knew how the movie industry worked and started going to auditions. He had talent and ended up scoring a few roles. He started with commercials of course, but when Zoe and Selena were 2 he had scored a supporting role in a popular TV series.
Zoe and Selena grew up to be beautiful children but their personalities didn't match them. Zoe was a total bitch that probably could scare monsters away with her snarkiness and Selena became a quiet, dark child that no one really wanted to talk to. Zoe often picked up on her sister, annoyed by the fact that Selena seemed so at ease reading while Zoe suffered with her dyslexia.
The more they grew up, the worse Zoe’s dyslexia got and she needed to depend on tutors to pass her classes. By the time she was 13, she was already fed up with it. She was able to get into the popular crowd due to her father’s status (he had by now gotten major roles in some movies after the series had ended) and started spreading nasty rumors about her sister.
Selena only became more anti-social and often sought for a safe place in the school’s library during the breaks. She didn’t talk much at dinner, the only time her father came by to see them, and that got Caleb and his parents worried. After hearing a conversation about Selena’s well-being and how she seemed to be feeling lonely, Zoe became even angrier.
On their first day of high school, something weird happened. Selena who usually stayed up later at the school so she didn’t have to go with Zoe had to go earlier because there was no homework to do and the library was closed.
On their way home, something made the car crash against a lamp post. The driver died on the impact but they were able to get out with only some scratches and a gash on Zoe’s stomach. When they got out of the car, they saw a huge dog fighting with a kid.
The kid cut the dog open with his sword and when he noticed both sisters there, he said he was sorry that the dog had gotten to them. Another kid appeared with goat legs and told the other that Zoe and Selena were demigods.
The kid then tried convincing them to come with him to a place where they would be safe and Selena almost did. But Zoe glared and said they were only two lunatics that escaped from some mental asylum nearby and dragged Selena away from them and to their house. Selena and Zoe decided to act as if that had never happened and got on with their lives like always.
The last drop to Zoe’s hate of Selena was taken when Valentine’s Day came by on that year. Selena had now found friends since her sister’s rumors weren’t known there and she had actually gotten quite a deal of guys liking her coy demeanor.
On that day, Zoe had around 15 letters on her hand. All of them were from boys that didn’t want to give them directly to Selena and asked for her to deliver to her sister. Zoe’s rage had reached her brink.
She set fire to all the letters and spread new rumors about Selena. Soon, her sister lost her few friends, one by one, and Zoe had won her reputation back. Zoe was more than happy to see her sister gone from any talks in the school hallways.
Few years later, when her final exams came by, Zoe was in bad waters. If she didn’t get perfect grades on every test, she’d flunk 90% of her classes. She had gotten a geeky boy to tutor her and she was stuck in the library every break they had studying. Selena had gotten back to her habit of staying hidden in the library and decided to hide from her sister when she saw her close. Zoe never noticed, too caught up in her grades to care.
The day before their final Physics test, Zoe was cramming everything she could in her head with the help of her tutor while Selena kept trying to avoid them. But when the librarian asked Selena to get some books from the shelf right behind the table Zoe and her tutor were, chaos broke loose.
Zoe’s tutor grinned a Cheshire cat smile when he saw Selena trying to become part of the wall so her sister wouldn’t notice her there. Suddenly, a huge blow of wind knocked the table and the chairs away together with Zoe. The table had fallen right on her and she was struggling to get off.
Her tutor then turned into a demon made of wind and went straight for Zoe’s throat. He started choking her when Selena threw a random heavy book at him. He was solidified to be able to choke Zoe so the book hit him straight in the head. It was so thick that it was enough to knock him out and let go of Zoe.
In a rush of adrenaline, Zoe kicked off the table and threw a chair at the wind-demon. It flew right through him and he moved to attack Selena. He summoned great winds which threw books out from their shelves and made Selena unable to move.
When the demon was only a few steps away from her, he suddenly fell on the floor sound asleep. The librarian then came running and took both girls wrists and started running to the schools parking lot.
When they got there, the librarian pushed both of them in the backseat of her car and ran to the driver’s seat. She then sped off the parking lot with the twins wondering out-loud what that had been (only Zoe’s choice of words had been a little more colorful).
When the librarian had to stop for gas, she explained everything to them. She was a sleep nymph and had gone to their school to take care of demigods. When she had seen the venti attacking them, she put him to sleep for a short time and ran off with them. She was going to take them to camp half-blood so they would be safe with other demigods.
Selena and Zoe both tried calling their grandparents but the librarian took away their phones and stepped on them until they broke into small pieces. She told them the signal would be the same as firing fireworks in a midnight sky.
She told them to look for a telephone booth where it would be safer to call their parents. When they found one, few blocks from the gas station, they left a message for their father and spoke to their grandma. They said they’d come back when they could but that it would probably take a long time. The librarian then drove them to Long Island and Camp, where they were claimed by Nyx.
